I am a Provincetown-based artist specializing in original oil paintings of seascapes and landscapes. I am also a professor of religion, spirituality and ethics, having taught at the university level for 35 years - and still teaching in Boston.
Early in my academic career, I had the fortune of spending five years in Rome. It was there that I developed a great appreciation for art. Each day walking to the university, I stopped in churches and museums filled with works by Caravaggio, Raphael, and Michelangelo. I explored the soaring ancient monuments of Rome filled with frescoes, mosaics and sculptures. Throughout Italy, medieval city centers and breathtaking landscapes inspired an intense personal aesthetic transformation.
My love affair with Italy awakened a deep urge to find a way to capture the feeling and experience of those places in pigment and canvas. In 2003, with a few brushes, some acrylic paint and a fresh canvas, I spent the afternoons of my vacation in Provincetown diving into this new medium of creativity and expression. Over the next four years I experimented with different subjects - landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, and human form, and shifted exclusively to oils.
In 2008, I took a workshop from one of Provincetown's most renowned artists - Robert Cardinal. He is known for his dramatic use of late evening and early morning light to create rich contrasts and color. The lessons were invaluable and foundational for bringing my work to a new maturity.
Provincetown is an inspiring place to work. For over 100 years, artists have come here to capture its intense light and color. The shape and form of dunes, marshes, wharfs, boats, homes and buildings provide endless opportunities for creativity. In each piece, I seek to capture form through contrast of color and light. I want people to feel soft breezes blowing through the dune grasses and to sense the warmth of the sun as it is reflected in the golden sand. I hope people will feel calming energy in simple yet rich images of this magical town and its surrounding seascape.
